Every year OnePlus takes two slots to introduce its new flagship smartphones- the first to unveil the regular model and the second slot for the Pro (simply to say the upgrade version of the regular variant) model which is released a couple of months later following the standard variant debut. The Chinese OEM in May last year announced the flagship OnePlus 7 and 7T and after 4-5 months gap the upgraded versions- OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro took the launch stage floor.
OnePlus’s yet again will take the stage floor to launch its upcoming flagship OnePlus 8 series. The company taking to its official Twitter handle announced it will showcase its new OnePlus 8 series on Tuesday, April 14.
Considering the previous smartphone launch timeline, the upcoming OnePlus smartphone series launch is scheduled a bit earlier. But unlike the predecessors that are launched with grandeur, the OnePlus 8 series will be an online-only launch event (all thanks to corona outbreak). The event will be live-streamed on YouTube and OnePlus’ official website at 8:30 PM IST.
OnePlus has used the tagline “Lead with Speed” for the 2020 OnePlus flagship phones. Alongside the tagline and a smartphone outline, the teaser image also hints at an imminent OnePlus TV launch- perhaps the rumored OnePlus TV 55 Q1 Pro at the event.
Talking about rumors, reports suggest that OnePlus might release three variants- OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and a budget device under the moniker OnePlus Z. The budget-friendly handset is tipped to join the other two variants in July. OnePlus has already confirmed that the new OnePlus 8 series will feature 120Hz display refresh rates. However, the OnePlus Z with such a high refresh rate is highly unlikely.
Further, the leaked renders which are making round over the past few months have already given us a fair idea of what the latest smartphone series will look like. The renders revealed by @OnLeaks suggest that the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will have tall form factor, a cut-out at the top left corner to house in-display front camera, a near bezel-less display, vertically aligned triple rear cameras stacked at the center. The OnePlus Z will likely have design tweaks with a front-camera cutout at the center and dual cameras positioned at the left side on the back panel.
Rumored specifications list on the table indicates that like the previous iteration the OnePlus 8 family will get similar treatment in terms of hardware. The devices are expected to feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 flagship SoC. The OnePlus 8 Pro version is said to pack a host of upgraded features (compared to the predecessor)- IP68 rating, 120Hz QHD+ display, 30W wireless charging, a 108MP primary sensor from Samsung, Night Portrait mode, 3HDR video among others.
OnePlus 8 is tipped to feature similar aspects as the OnePlus 7T except for a new processor, bigger battery and a new 12GB RAM variant. Both OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 are expected to be 5G enabled.
As for the budget OnePlus Z device, it is rumored to house a MediaTek chipset, a 90Hz punch-hole display, and dual rear cameras.
In terms of pricing and availability, the OnePlus 8 family is speculated to cost around $600 for the regular variant and around $700 for the Pro version. The cheap version OnePlus Z is tipped to retail at Euro 400 in the UK. While speculations are rife, it’s better to take with a grain of salt and wait patiently for the official announcement.
