Dark mode for WhatsApp offers a new fresh look with a familiar experience. It’s designed to minimize battery consumptions and reduce eye strain in low light environments. And I also hope it will help prevent those awkward moments where your phone lights up the room.

The WhatsApp dark theme will be nearly pure black on iOS devices and a darker grey on Android devices. It’s a long-awaited feature, one that WhatsApp admits in a launch video (above) with lots of people peeking into their phones. The short video, entitled “Hello Darkness,” includes a previously unreleased version of “The Sound of Silence” by Paul Simon.
