The deadly COVID-19 took a heavy toll on the functioning of the Tech companies. The events and conferences being conducted by the companies are either being cancelled or converted into an online-only event. The latest news is that Google I/O 2020 has been completely cancelled in all formats due to the complete shutdown of the California state.
Google took to the official Google Developers Twitter handle and revealed that the decision has been taken in line with shelter in place requirements by the local Bay Area Government.
The company will not hold any I/O event in any capacity in 2020. The Shelter in Place is in place in California in a bid to stop the spread of the COVID-19. Meanwhile, Google will take adequate steps to educate the communities to stay safe, informed and connected in the time of distress. The creation of an exclusive portal for tackling the COVID-19 is a step in the right direction.
A #GoogleIO update: Out of concern for the health and safety of our developers, employees, and local communities — and in line with “shelter in place” requirements by the local Bay Area government — we sadly will not be holding an I/O event in any capacity this year. (1/3)

The Google I/O 2020 scheduled to be held at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California was cancelled two weeks back. Previously, it was widely reported that the company could conduct an online-only event due to the COVID-19 scare. With the development, the company is not in a position to even conduct an online-only event as well due to the shelter in place order issued by the California Administration.
Google I/O throws open a wide opportunity for the developers to meet, learn and socialize with each other. The inability of the company to conduct an online-only event is a setback because developers lost a great chance to experience new features of both the existing and the upcoming products. The company usually reveals new features, hardware products, and upcoming Android release during the event.
The company will now switch over to blogs and community forums to announce new developments surrounding Google products. However, there is a possibility that Google could launch a new Android version in August when the situation improves. We expect the launch of new Pixel smartphones also around that time frame.
The fight against COVID-19 has been aggressive in California. The authorities have imposed strict measures including complete lockdown. While companies have started to ask employees to work from home, people are being asked not to venture outside for non-essential activities. The shelter in place policy will be in place until further notice and hence we don’t know when companies will start to work again as before.
We have to wait and watch as to how Google release the upcoming Android releases. The company already released the Android 11 Developer Preview with the Developer Preview 2 dropping by early this week. In all probability, Apple will also cancel the online-only event if the restrictions were not lifted. We are unable to see any chance for the company to conduct the event in any capacity when the whole of California is facing a severe crisis due to the complete lockdown.
